Lazy Sunday is truly heaven on earth.
This was how I spent my Sunday morning…stretched out in a hammock, a slow breeze gently rocking me back and forth, and the sounds of tiny birds flitting just above my head. When I was a little kid, Sunday was my favorite day of the week. It was the day that I’d create something, watch a movie with Dad, and enjoy one of my Mom’s delicious home cooked meals. Talk about heaven.
As I grew up and moved out of the house, Lazy Sundays weren’t the same. I knew that I’d not hear the sounds of Big Band music as Dad shined his shoes in the next room. I knew that Mom wouldn’t be surprising me with a snack of pretzel sticks and cheese squares while I toiled over my creative project. I was on my own and it was up to me to carry on these traditions.
Now that I have kids of my own, Sundays have taken on new traditions — we start the days off with my own version of Grandma Pat’s “Big Breakfast”. Later on we congregate in my living room and watch game shows on Nickelodeon together, eating our lunch off TV trays. Inevitably, either Alex or I doze off while Gwen puts together amazing and colorful creations with crayons, colored pencils, and construction paper. We laugh, chat, and just enjoy the time together. While I doubt they’ll hold this modern day version of “Lazy Sunday” as close to their hearts as I hold my childhood version of “Lazy Sunday”, it’s still a satisfactory nod to the original.
As I laid there in the hammock this morning and watched the clouds roll by, I wondered how my other friends were spending their Sunday. In the end, I decided I was gonna be selfish and just clear my mind…why think when I can simply relax?
