And I have a friend who ends EVERY sentence of every e-mail with "lol." It can be about anything from her pets to her impending divorce and it will read "I'm sorry I haven't been in touch for a while but I have been so busy with school lol" What is so funny about that? Look at Twilight Zone. Almost zero special effects, yet the stories were haunting and compelling and still work today. "Talking Tina", one of the scariest of them all, was nothing but a series of still shots of a motionless doll with voiceovers. The original Star Wars worked because even though it used amazing ground-breaking special effects, it used them to enhance the story but not to drive the story. Then CGI came along and turned it all into a freakin' cartoon. (I still don't get why episodes 1-3 aren't considered animated movies.)
